29TH JANUARY 2026 - WITH MAGGIE-ANNE

29/1/2026

Maggie-Anne came dressed for the outside weather in her first pose this morning!  For some reason it was quite cold in the room - it seems to be either too hot or too cold - but maybe that's just how we come dressed. We also welcomed a new member, Graham, who joined the portraitists.  Let's hope he enjoyed his first time.
The hyacinth in the still life was turned repeatedly to ensure that an eventual position was found to suit as many members as wanted to include it.  The scent that wafted from it at intervals during the morning was heavenly.
I had to go very early, so thank you to Avril, who provided me with the photos and comments from the end of the morning [Hannah].
But first, Angela's pics from the workshop Frances gave last week on hagstones.  She has worked further on the coloured one after the event.
And here is Duke, from Carolyn, one of her very characterful animal portraits.
Picture
Diana found her own composition for the hyacinth, with plenty of colour. Her second photo shows that 'It used to be art all over the kitchen table ,now it’s jigsaws...'
Here are the portraits from this morning...
First Elizabeth's (2), Ian J's and Jackie's
Next Penny's, and new member Graham's...
Finally Avril's crop from this morning.
Judith was 'fiddling' with books and repeating dogs - not sure the books are the right way up, but they looked like this was the way they were supposed to be...
Harriet has been doing an online composition course with Sally Hirst, and has used it to good effect here.
Picture
And finally, Sally P, with elements of the still life and then using up leftover paints for the fish.
My effort was not either good or finished, as I left too early.
In two weeks time there is a morning-only workshop for working towards our exhibitions in the summer. The first exhibition, at Eye Town Hall, is for A4 sized framed pictures for which frames can be bought for £10. The second is at the Bank for the whole of June. Come and use the time to prepare your entry for either.  Even if you are not taking part, come, and use the time for your own project.
Next week's blogger is Avril.  Please send contributions to her.

22nd January 2026 taken by frances beasley on hagstones

Frances gave an interesting day today and was kind enough to explain her session.

I have collected hagstones for year and thought it would be fun to use them as a theme today.

The idea was to first of all make a detailed study in pencil of your stone and then move on to being more adventurous using a variety of media. Charcoal, ink, watercolour, wax resist, acrylic, monoprint.
As we used these media we could be less reliant on being totally accurate in our representation and consider textures and shapes.
The final idea was to produce a design using some of these images and possibly move into a more abstract composition.
Barry's, Ians and Laurens hagstones
Penny's lively stones with nice shading
The first two are Sally L's and the next three Sally P's which both have wonderful use of colour and texture
Josie's bright bold creations and Jackie's dainty detailed work with descriptions
Ian Jones's liner work and one that looks like a women's face with wirey hair
Lesley's realistic stones and ones using acrylic and  effective monoprints
Harriet has produced a varied selection, one looks like a cows head and another resembles cave drawings.
Avril was pleased with her work today, which seemed clean and fun
Next weeks blogger is Hannah..

WORKSHOP WITH TAMSIN

15/1/2026

Acrylic paints with limited palette.

As an artist, Tamsin is inspired by Suffolk landscapes and her paintings include both the rich texture of wild flowers and grasses, as well as some very interesting skies. Below are two examples from her webpage, where more of her work can be found at tamsinlittleart.com
Tamsin uses acrylics, she finds that it is a veratile medium which she can add layers and blend to create the effects she desires.
She works with a limited palette using the following colours:
Paynes Grey, Cadium Yellow (medium hue), Dioxazine Purple, Golden Ochre, Titanium White.
She also adds one other colour, for example indigo blue.
First we mixed the colours, see Tamsin's examples below, the first using Paynes Grey and the second using Indigo instead. We all had a go at mixing these colours, Frances went 'off piste' with hers, and produced a lovely abstract image, see below as well

Tamsin did a short demonstate, showing how to produce grasses blowing in the wind. Then we all set about choosing an image from photos - to be used to inspire, not to reproduce. Here are Tamsin's paintings, the first showing how to use acrylic inks to get an impression of vegetation and the second showing grasses at the edge of a field.
We all enjoyed the workshops and here is the result of our work. First examples showing paintings done by Frances, Ian C, Jackie, Judith, Laurens, and Lesley.
Then we have paintings done by Ian J, Maggie-Anne, Penny, Sally P, Jenny and Richard
Here are pictures from Josie, and a second one from Lesley done at the end, and then mine

A Very Happy New Year to all our members!

A chilly start to the new year and our first session at the bowls club.
Judith provided us with a challenging still life table, and several different poses to keep us on our toes.
I have to point out that unusually for a life drawing model she put on more clothes as the session progressed, and several of us followed her example ending up in coats.

The first of today’s portraits are from Sandra

and then three portraits from Ian Jones.

Three from Frances.

A gallery of portraits from Penny!

and from Avril

The still life table scenario

First a view from one side of the display from Jackie, sorry Jackie this photo doesn’t do your picture justice, and Josie

Sally P and Joanna were on the opposite side of the table

Jenny, Frances and I had a view from one end.

And Lesley and Diana were at the other end of the table, Lesley’s pastel painting on a colourful background gives a very festive feel, and Diana brought a picture of a colourful still life and added some objects from the table in her own inimitable style.

Ian C and Maggie Ann were both focusing on birds.
Ian’s soulful thrush, and Maggie Ann’s chicken which has I notice featured in several other
pictures,- I blame the photographer .

and finally…

A New Year’s Resolution…check your gallery page, is there anything you would like to add or remove? Please send extras to Hannah.
if you haven’t yet got a gallery page please send some ( half a dozen) representative photos of your work along with a short ‘blurb’ to Hannah for inclusion.

  • slight change to the workshop day on January 22 nd.
Frances will be using ‘Hag Stones’ as a starting point for exploring shape and texture in mixed media.
