Thursday 25th April, watercolour workshop

Today was all about getting textures in watercolour.  Once you have a bit of gum arabic and some granulating medium, you are well away!  Apart that is from a bit of skill in judging how wet your paper is, how wet your brush, how much pigment on the brush, the angle of your paper ... and your brush ... and how quickly you work.  Except that gum arabic is supposed to slow the processes down and help you to relax!  Er ... yes.

We experimented, trying to remember the order:  clear water wash, gum arabic, pigment, palate, paint, lift ....  But don't for goodness' sake wash when you should spray or spray when you should wash!  And if you're granulating, steer clear of that water, even if it is watercolour painting.

I make light, but in fact it was a very interesting and absorbing day.  We have Gilly to thank for her  great demonstrations and clear explanations, as well as for her personal guidance and critique at the end.  All these techniques do help us to understand and use our medium better.  Just keep practising!

Thursday 18th April, Chairman's project "Inheritance"

Inspired by this project our members engaged in thought-provoking musings and produced interesting images relating to Inheritance.  Many were concentrated on the environmental problems of the planet, others on family or treasures handed down.  An eclectic mix of subjects and media.

My apologies if I did not quite get your 'story' right.  Let me know and I will put it right next time.

Watercolour workshop next week, Cambridge the week after and then we begin the Summer Programme.  Summer?  Is it nearly here already!   N

We've come to expect a bit of drama from Richard and he didn't disappoint today.  With the theme of travel, Beth and Emily were striking in their bright red stewardess's uniforms.  The three of them had obviously gone to a lot of trouble, considering every detail in preparing both the presentation of the models and the still life arrangement.  If only we had had much more time to work on them (say, a week in my case!)

Many thanks to all.  Also thanks to Hannah, who kindly rescued me by taking the photos when my smart phone proved not to be so smart after all.

It's our Chairman's Project next week, so don't forget to bring along all your pictures on the subject of "Inheritance".

Esmé was our super model this morning, dressed most attractively in her finery.  Two quick 5-minute poses were followed by half an hour, then another hour's pose after the coffee break.

The two still life arrangements provided lots to inspire and led to some excellent work.  Please click on images to enlarge them.
