Knettishall Heath

25/7/2024

A good turnout today at Knettishall heath, 11 of us ready to capture the lovely views of the river, pool, a lovely old bridge, and the surrounding countryside. The summer is changing the greens in the landscape, more mid-tones and darks.

And the results of our hard day’s work…
Frances completed three vibrant sketches, a landscape view, the river, and Dragon Flies in the reeds
Lesley painted the lovely old bridge
Josie has finished her mixed media barn started last week using Neocolour crayons for an extra pop of colour, and this week a landscape view over the pond, and impressions of the variety of foliage.
Sally’ s initial sketch in pencil, a study of a striking tree by the water with pinkish leaves, which we all wanted to include, and a comprehensive sketch of the old bridge.
Next three from Harriet, the effectively capturing the texture of the landscape,

Jackie painted two watercolours of the view across the pool, top, and another of that attractive pink leaved tree, and a detailed pencil drawing of the bridge.
Ian’s finished landscape, the colours almost echoed by the foliage behind him, and an initial sketch of the pool, showing Lesley in the background.
Sally Tyley wanted to capture the different textural layers of the  landscape.
Ian has some new watercolours and used them very effectively on his landscape, the bright colours certainly brought the scene to life, this is what it would have been like on a sunny day!
And here’s one from me of the reeds at the river’s edge
Carolyn has been enjoying drawing the ‘dignified’ Arum Lilies in her garden
Picture
And Diana is still in the throes of the Tour De France playing very effectively with images taken from television, I feel a workshop in the offing here?
Some colourful images from Hannah, choosing work to exhibit at  The  Forum this weekend.
And finally two from Avril who ably assisted by her dog Bob made the most of a lovely day out at Knettishall Heath.
Next week’s venue- Hoxne Watermill, see website for parking details
Next week’s blog- please send contributions to Hannah

Hemingstone old hall - 18th July 2024

We were made very welcome by Eleanor as Sarah was away in Spain so unable to be with us. 9 of us showed up today to enjoy the sunshine, tea, cakes and 4 of us  a splash around in the pool.
Lovely views and members setting out for a fun morning in the sun.
In order of showing first two are Sally P's  of the barn, then Ian's acrylic painting done by the pool and then Avril's watercolour, soluble pastel and ink
The first two are Jackie's watercolours, the flowers are incomplete due to the lack of time and the last two are Josies which are very vibrant as usual.
Four beautiful renditions of the barn done by Sally T and Judith
Picture
Harriet's panaramic view of her suroundings
Sally L said: It’s plants week this week. The first, Geranium picture was much improved by turning a photograph into a tonal image
Lesley sent this: I hope you’re having a a lovely time at Sarah’s. Brilliant weather for a swim!
I’m at my CQIceni meeting.

These two pen sketches I did at Sibton on Sunday. Both are looking across the valley of the River Yox, from the ruins of Sibton Abbey.
Picture
Carolyn sent her wonderful pencil painting: Roy took me for a tour of the garden and I got some lovely photos of flowers to use. Attached is one with Hydrangeas and Achilleas. I had to stop myself from fiddling more, as this does not improve but rather to worsen it.
Have a good day. Nice weather forecast

Picture
This week Hannah has mostly been deconstructing:  I had an oil painting I wasn't that keen on and instead of simply sanding it down and painting it white for re-use, I attacked it rather more, with scrapers and brush cleaner.  Then I painted over the original colours and then wiped off what I had done.  I am much more pleased with the result, which looks kind of broken-down, but in an interesting way.

Frances was well annoyed that she mixed up dates and couldn’t go to the lovely venue today AND take advantage of the swimming pool!!!

In the meantime... a painting in the making and two more butterflies and ferns- can’t stop doing them😊
Harriet took two pictures of the artists discussing perspective, method of working  etc.
What a beautiful day we've had. With thanks to Sally P for the photos

Please note Sally L is doing the blog next week.

Message from Lesley:
Next week we are at Knettishall Heath. Let’s hope the weather holds as  apart from the heath and woodland, there will be
an opportunity for more swimming,  this time wild swimming in the Little Ouse.
I will be posting more information about the site, including about car parking, before next Thursday, look for it in the members’ section of the EAG website.

11TH JULY 2024 - WALSHAM-LE-WILLOWS

11/7/2024

Unable to go to Walsham-Le-Willows today, I must thank Lesley for her running instalments of photos, and description, also Jackie, Sally P and Ian C, who all contributed beyond their own work for the session.   The day started at the village hall with a lovely atmosphere. As you can see below, it was busy, the coffee and cake was delicious, there were books to buy and ping pong on the go.  Jackie comments that even in dull weather it is such a pretty village.  It seems the locals were very friendly and interested.  Sally P said she had never been to a venue where so many enquired about what members were doing.  By 2.30 it had started to rain, (see the churchyard artists, sheltering and cold below) so the group retreated to the pub for coffee and tea.
First Sally P, who had to negotiate road closures just to get out of Hoxne - a 2 mile detour just to pick up Jackie! She said, 'After a guided tour from a local, Lesley and I arrived at the butchers and finally settled down to draw. Ian C had almost finished his first picture! Everyone was so friendly. I've never been to a venue where so many people asked us what we were doing. The butcher offered to model, another chap offered his garden..... twice. So four of us went to take a look but we sadly didn't have enough time to produce much. '  The last two outdoor photos above are of the house offered as a model (The Chestnuts) and the old reading room. sketch 1 is the butchers, 2 is the roofline of The Chestnuts.
Next Lesley, These are both watercolour and pen, the first is a footpath in the village, and the second is the 6 Bells pub
Picture
Jackie says, 'I found the dilapitated old pub just crying out to be painted.  Several passers by stopped to tell me about its history and that it was up for sale. At the fourth telling I had to explain that I was there to paint it not to buy it. '
Ian J had a busy day.  Here are his his three sketches, one with watercolour.
And Josie produced two painted sketches - the first one is a 10 minute piece.
Sally T tackled the church.  She said, ' Quite complicated. The flint work was impressive but the weather stopped play. One is pen and ink the other pencil.'
Harriet says she is intending to put a w/c wash on this as she thought the colours were nice - Walsham Le Willows Church - interesting porch.

Picture
Ian C made these three sketches during the day.
It has been very interesting this week to collate the blog, such a contrast of imagery, from the wide landscape and big skies last week to the architectural subjects today.  Well done to the planning group for the summer programme!
Avril was busy this morning and unable to come, but she has sent a sketch she did when Frances ran a workshop last winter.
Picture
Frances is in Brittany.  She says, 'We have old shutters found in our barn here and  I have decorated them in the past. Challenging myself with another…
Here is one I did some time ago.
These are two sketches I did yesterday, enjoying a last day here … before our next trip!
Picture
Carolyn used the photo of thistles from last week at Southwold to produce this lovely study.
Next week's venue is at Hemingstone.  Let's hope the weather proves suitable for swimming.  I seem to remember that last year it wasn't kind.  Don't forget your cossies, and send any contributions for next week's blog to Avril, who will be in charge of this page then.

old Hall Farm Southwold

4/7/2024

A beautiful day at Old Hall Farm Southwold, but a strong wind made painting conditions difficult, but eight of us were up for the challenge, so after a quick coffee we were off!
clutching, paper, brushes, hats and each other!

The landscape at Old Hall Farm was stunning, there were drifts of wild flowers which lent a welcome splash of colour, and the Blythe estuary was glittering in the sun.
You can see that none of us were foolish enough to attempt to use an easel, and one of us managed a quick 'fag' too!
We had all produced several pieces of work by tea time.
Lesley had drawn two sketches, and painted two watercolours a view up towards the barn, and the view across the estuary.
Ian's watercolour view across the estuary, and sketch of the buildings towards St Felix school.
Sally's two pictures, a sketch of the foliage on either side of a grassy path, and a lively pastel, giving an feeling of the windy conditions, and the lovely Mallow flowers..
Jackie's interpretation of the grassy path leading to the estuary, and a useful addition to any landscape, Jo, Ian and Sally!
Jo gives a real feeling of the windy conditions in this view over the estuary, and another quieter interpretation
and Sally Tyley has sent three sketches two of the view towards southwold, and the river embankment.
And here are my efforts from today
in complete contrast Diana has been engrossed in the Tour De France, and has managed to capture in oil pastels that strange wiggling motion of the massed cyclists.
And Frances has sent us a '''postcard' from France, a sketch of the banks of the Loire, the second from a picnic spot at Chalonnes Sur Loire, and finally a romanesque portal at Bourges cathedral
Carolyn has sent this lovely sketchof a rose, i always think a very difficult flower to draw.
and from Hannah a beautiful bright oil painting, based on a small section of a bigger painting- 'The Road Again'
And Finally a message from Lesley
Please bring a flask next week, for morning coffee, afternoon tea will e provided.

Hannah is in charge of next week’s blog, so please send contributions to her.
