25TH SEPTEMBER 2025 - LAST OF THE SUMMER IN MAGGIE-ANNE'S GARDEN

The summer's season of plein air sessions drew to a close today with a visit to Maggie-Anne's tranquil garden in Eye. The weather was glorious, with brilliant sunshine. The committee, seen below hard at work, were kept inside by a meeting for part of the morning. I did not stay beyond the meeting, but you will find some sketches and paintings below made by other people who did stay to enjoy the surroundings, and indeed you can see some of them out and about in the garden in my photos.

You can see Lesley's position above, looking back towards Maggie-Anne's house. The tree in front of her is not the small pear in her watercolour - that is the smaller one behind.

Harriet, seen in the distance by the house wall, focused her attention on groundsel growing in a bucket, a delicate drawing.

Carolyn had a recent visit from Sally P, bringing garden flowers with her as a gift. Carolyn very much enjoyed the colour of the flowers and set to with her pencils to produce this drawing.

And here is Sally P's own work from this morning, using an assortment of pastels, mostly soft. She said she struggled with the greens here. I think the composition works very well, and if she hadn't said something about the greens, how would I have guessed?

Here is Avril's selection, a good few to choose from as usual. She said, 'We had a great day in Maggie's garden and she provided biscuits , and a selection of cakes, the date one was really moist and scrumptious.'

Finally three from Jackie. The first is across the table at the committee meeting, left to right, me (Hannah), Maggie-Anne and Lesley. I had the sun full behind me, and so my face was obscured. the second is in the garden, and the third in Eye.

Next week is the AGM. We hope you will all come and participate. Don't forget to bring the piece of work you are most pleased with from this summer. It doesn't have to be from an EAG session. If you are unable to come, you could send me a photo of the work, with some words to go with it, for next week.

The Winter programme for this year is now on the website, for you to see, and take note of when you are doing your turn. I will blog again next week, so send any contributions to me, Hannah. There is also information on Stop Press about a textile exhibition starting next weekend in Woodbridge, that Avril is participating in.

The Eye Art Guild visit to Framlingham, the picture showing 3 members, Avril and her dog, Jackie and Angela.

There were 7 of us in total, around and about in Framlingham. After being delayed, (road closures) and so arriving late I missed Josie and Ian, but I'm told they were there. After Sally T and I put the world to rights over a cuppa, we headed to the castle where we bumped into Angela, Avril with her dog, and Jackie. They all had aleady done some drawings. (see below).

I left jackie and Sally inside the castle, and went for a walk round the outside, including the meadow. See the photos below. It took me back to when our previous dog was young and we used to visit regularly, and she ran off through the wood into the large moat

The weather was OK, dull and a bit cold, no rain though, but it was windy.

Beccles Quay September 11th

Six members at Beccles today, most of us stayed around the quay, but Jackie ventured down to the Lido, and the Old Market, AND The weather was in our favour this week.
But first Coffee, and a lengthy session putting the world to rights. You’ll notice that we are all smiling in the photograph, but we did all agree that one way and another things are pretty grim at the moment. - nothing like a day’s painting to restore our equilibrium!

First Lesley with a view towards the old Beccles bridge,and also a watercolour of the view over the water looking in the opposite direction.

Also a badly submerged boat, somebody else’s problem thank goodness.

Harriet found some beautiful swans on the slipway.

And a colourful view of the footbridge in mixed media.

Hannah produced a lovely drawing of a boat moored near the footbridge.

Sally T chose a similar view to Lesley looking across the cut to the boats river’s edge and the boats moored there.

I also drew the view similar to Lesley’s of the old road bridge.
i was using a new ‘find’ from the art range in Woodware workshop, a Daler Rowney system 3 fluid acrylic ‘pen’ I do not recommend this frustrating piece of equipment as the nib is quite fine,and the acrylic paint congeals and frustratingly blocks it!

Jackie bravely struck out into Beccles, drawing a collection of canoes at the Lido that reminded her of sardines in a can, and another lovely drawing of one of the picturesque houses in the old market place.

Diana , has ‘beamed herself into Beccles’ and produced this collage of a view over the footbridge!

and now for something completely different…
Carolyn has sent this drawing of the plums from her garden, ideally suited to the medium of coloured pencil drawing, it beautifully reproduces that velvety sheen on the skin. Delicious!

and Frances has sent a pen and wash drawing of that moment when the Hydrangeas tell you that autumn is on it’s way.

and her sequence of scraperboard drawings, first in reverse, then ink on the board,and then beginning to scrape away the image. She isn’t completely satisfied with the results, and is considering repeating it on white scraperboard.

4th september 2025 Frog Farm, Thwaite

8 Members turned up today at Frog Farm despite the wet weather, three of us started as the rain came down the rest sheltered under the tarpaulin. The owner was kind enough to supply some flowers for us to draw from and take home, so we took them to Frances house. Frances was kind enough to invite us and supplied drinks and made freshly baked scones.

Some of the sunflowers were past their best but there was still plenty to draw.

Jackie drew a beautiful pen and ink of the planters in Frances's garden and Sunflowers in vases. Sally P had to leave early but produced the last painting of the sunflowers.

Ian J was impressed by the large window and view outside and also went into the garden with his watercolours and painted the grapevine. Josie successfully treated the sunflowers in different ways.

Frances had fun printing and finishing off her cards which looked wonderful.

Avril, me was like a child in a sweet shop there was so much for inspiration in Frances house lots of interesting things.

Sally T had kindly asked us to her house for tea, biscuits and a cake. We had a very sociable time as Sally's husband Phil and their next door neighbour Martin joined us.

It is sunflower day today and I’m sure you will all enjoy their beauty. Better from real life than photo, but this is all that is available to me. sent to us by Carolyn.
