A tribute to tony
Tony Hucklesby was a very long standing member of The Eye Arts Guild. Sadly, I only knew him for the last six or so years. He served for many years as a tower of strength on our committee.
We have to thank Tony for many diverse contributions to The Guild. He inspired, helped, cajoled, tutored and on occasion castigated the membership (the latter always with a naughty and mischievous glint in the eye). Tony was a painter and draughtsman of great integrity and skill and produced a prolific number of lovely paintings, from the architectural through to sensitive and beautiful life studies. He was a stoic follower of the Guild’s Summer Programme, when we all travel to different, new, interesting and sometimes “difficult” venues to paint on a summer’s day, often in horizontal rain. Very little in the way of adversity stopped Tony from getting to the appointed site. |
Whilst being incredibly able and talented himself, Tony was always enthusiastic in his help of less skilful artists. He contributed an enormous amount of help and advice to the membership of The Guild, but always very quietly and with great sensitivity and consideration. He introduced our membership to the idea of painting to music and we were all fascinated to discover how different moods and effects resulted from painting to say Beethoven or Miles Davis or Doris Day!
At Christmas, Tony went to enormous trouble and care to create a “patchwork” painting for the group, where we all took a segment to paint in isolation, and then joined them up at the Christmas party magically recreating an old master, but in our own various styles. Sally Procner is keeping this, amongst many happy memories of Tony, alive by recreating this exercise for the Guild.
Tony was a positive, enigmatic and creative stalwart of The Eye Arts Guild and we shall miss him dearly.
