24th AUGUST 2023 - NEW BUCKENHAM

24/8/2023

I understand it was raining first thing in Hoxne, and maybe in other Eye adjacent places.  Perhaps that explains how few of us were in New Buckenham this morning (5), where the weather was glorious and quite hot.  Unfortunately, the cake shop/Angel Cafe was not open.  I left just after lunch, so I don't know where the other four went for tea.  Coffee was had by three of us in the Kings Head pub, which was a very nice spot.  The food choices (had we been there for lunch) looked rather good too.  I don't feel I did New Buckenham justice in my sketch (later).  I'd forgotten how taxing architecture is.  Below some photos of the location. Thanks to Sally P and   Harriet for their contributions.
First, some work from last week that came late to the blog.  Remember, there is a deadline of 6pm (18.00 hrs) on the day...
Picture
This first from Ian J.  If you remember this was at Judith's house in Mendlesham Green.
And then two more, from the same venue, this time from Sally T.  irst, pen and ink of the shepherd's hut, and then a rusty filing cabinet.
Carolyn picked up an image from last week, and produced this wonderful portrait.

Jackie says, 'Weather too wet to venture far. Sketch of broken pot and Nasturtiums done under umbrella this morning, then started a painting but the skies cleared, the sun came out which totally messed up colours, light, everything! Also sending my now finished painting of a boat at Beccles . This needed some colour adjustment and I hope it's improved but a bit overworked. Best wishes to everyone'.
Diana was not able to come to New Buckenham, but has sent this array of work from the week...
'1 & 2. Went out with son to take photos to work from at home
3. Felt tips + water
4. Felt tips + cold tea + oil pastel
5. Son Charlie  did this for my birthday today  (acrylic)' - Happy Birthday from all of us, Diana!

Lesley is on holiday in Powys, and has sent an acrylic sketch of the view from her window at the farmhouse she is staying in. She says, 'The grass really is an amazingly bright green!'
Sally P went to Old Buckenham first, but made it to New eventually! She said that the remaining four went to the pub for tea at the end of the day.  No cake though!
Her drawings are of the Market house - two slightly different views.  She found it difficult to draw, and says it's not very accurate.  Fortunately, as we all know, accuracy cannot be judged by anyone who wasn't there.
Harriet has sent several sketches from today's outing.
From Frances, '
Quick impression watercolour and pencil corner of the garden,
Peacock butterfly appeared on an agapanthus. Watercolour,
Impression of sea once more from my memory of floating in it. Watercolour and pencil.'
My drawing [Hannah] isn't very accurate, either.  The proportions of the relative houses were very hard to work out, and I had at least three goes at it.  The sheep grazing on the grass is a sculpture, very realistic, and well-behaved!

Once more, work to me for next week.  The venue is Batteleys Cottage, full details on Events, Summer programme.

Have a good week!
