28TH APRIL 2022

So, finally we have got to the last session of the winter season - and the Chairman's Project, which this year you may remember, was 'Movement'.  And here is Sally 'The founder of the feast', beginning her presentation.  All of those present had something to show and the variety inspired by the one word was impressive.
Picture
Here are a few views of members showing their work and explaining their process.
As usual, there were some clever and amusing ideas - Jackie had created a watercolour that, as you can see in the photo, had a kite and string which could actually fly.  Richard used 'Under Milkwood' and audience participation to illustrate his presentation.  Freda brought in a video of the fish mobile she had created, and Sally somewhat dumbfounded us by first sitting, standing and walking - all movement! Diana is demonstrating her 'Movable Feast' of still life painted each Thursday, that can be endlessly arranged.
First selection, Left to right, both Maggie-Anne and Harriet's work capture the joyous movement of animals, Noreen (who had brought a selection of old images along with this painting of Southwold, complete with rolling seas), John (Box and Boxers - guess where the inspiration for this image comes from) and Frances, who was not able to attend, but had sent an explanation of the use of the triple hare image in ancient China, and its promulgation along the Silk Road.
Sally L had examined the movement of the gaze created by composition, and illustrated by this tree. Hilary and Ian studied movement in the landscape, Hilary's that of the sea, and Ian's clouds in the sky.  Avril's striking image was created from a video of her daughter's Pilates exercise, and Richard's abstract related to the movement of time, and day and night.
Here are Eileen's seascape, with crashing waves, Jackie's kite watercolour, Carolyn's waves in constant movement against the stillness of rocks, Diana's movable still life and
Here are some that need more than one image for explanation.  First Elaine, who decided that although the seascape shows movement, the water did not move as much as the cheetah and entelope did.
Sally P. started with the movement of ballet dancers and finished with two images she particularly liked: a pastel dancer and a drawing of ballerinas likened to fuschias.
Lesley started with two pastels of surfers off the north shore of Hawaii, and then went more kinetic with this mobile of textile butterflies.
And this is a small selection of the work that Jo did using Suminagashi, the Japanese paper marbling technique, the water in motion to help create the patterns.
Sally T's abstract copy in gouache, water colour and ink of Sybil Andrew's 'Speedway' linocut from 1934.  Sybil came from Bury St Edmunds and worked closely with Cyril Power.  Her second (on the right) is inspired by a Kandinsky, which is included.
Freda made a mobile of fish, but was unable to transport it, so she brought a video for us to see how it moves.  Click on the image to play it, and it will expand - full screen is at bottom rightof the player, once it plays
I got interested in murmurations, and ended up with these two images, by way of some consideration of migration.
Sally P wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all their hard work and ideas The work was all excellent and varied with so much thought gone into them, and a special thank you to Linda for the delicious home made cakes (which I heartily endorse !- Hannah).
Four members are participating in an exhibition at All Saints Church, Stradbroke this weekend, Sally P, Jackie, Ian and Harriet.  The exhibition is open from 10 am to 5 pm from today until Monday.

Next week it is the coach trip but work can still be sent in.  Noreen will be in charge of the blog, so you can send anything you want to include to her.

What wonderful weather!  As Carolyn says: great for encouraging us to get outside.

I (Noreen) received a letter from Cynthia, who most of you know and who is now in the Hartismere Care Home. She sends greetings to her “chums in the EAG” and says she is glad her surplus painting gear went to a Good Home. She struggles with her eyesight and hearing and was poorly for several days after her 4th Covid jab, but still seems in good spirits now, enjoying some charcoal drawing at their weekly art club meetings. Best wishes to Cynthia!
Maggie-Anne was in charge at the EAG this morning.  She sat for the portraits and supplied a vast array of beautiful flowers and other items  for the still life.  About 14 members were present.
These are Avril's many portraits. (On SkyArts they complain at only having four hours to complete one portrait!)
Diana has shown us her beautiful watercolour in stages, together with her view of the still life set up and people beavering away.
Frances was inspired by Picasso for her oil pastel and ink still life rendering. She went to the Sainsbury Centre yesterday to see two exhibitions, both of which she enjoyed. The first featured Picasso, his early work and influences, and the other the Scottish Women Colourists.

Harriet
has given us two renderings of her painting of flowers in a jug.
From Jackie we have three lovely drawings of Maggie-Anne,

Sally P
has produced three pieces of work this week, two of the cherry blossom and a 15-minute sketch of Maggie-Anne.
This is Sally T's picture for this week, in watercolour and pen.
Picture
And an entry from Jane of the same Spring Flowers and jug, I think.
Picture
Carolyn took the opportunity of Roy’s fishing leaves and newts out of his pond, to do the first of these drawings. She says she has outlined Roy’s hand to give the impression of their size, and notes that their tummies are very colourful. The second picture is an attempt at loose drawing of the cherry blossom.
Picture
This is my (Noreen's) attempt at painting “Daffs in the Ditch” in acrylics. It was again inspired by a view during one of my regular constitutionals. Other subjects there have tempted me, but are so far proving too complicated to do justice to. I may persist!

Don't forget it is the Chairman's Project on the theme of 'Movement' next week. Sally P urges us to come, even if we haven't done a picture, to support those who have.

Hope to see you lots of you there.

A lovely sunny, and for a change, quite warm day to take us into Easter weekend.  Jane provided two interesting and contrasting still life set ups today and sat as a model this morning.  The first half of the session was noticeably more quiet and concentrated than the second - and I have to confess to being a culprit!  If you would like to use the still life as a larger image to work from, I have included a download below.

So let us start with lunch!  Carolyn sent me a drawing of the ingredients she had subsequently eaten, and I hope, enjoyed, entitled, 'What's for lunch'.
Picture
Avril was, as usual, very industrious in her portrait sketching, and has also been bury with her textiles.  You will find details of an exhibition she is participating in on the 'Messages from Members' page.
Sally P chose to tackle a section of one of the still life subjects, and has achieved what she set out to do, a nicely loose watercolour. She was particularly pleased as it had been sometime since she had worked in the medium.
Picture
Diana had brought her own subject matter in the form of photos. She used double ended felt tips. Rough scribble then splashes of water, good practice at a portable technique for the summer.

Next, Jackie's drawings of Jane... which she said she had enjoyed, but felt a bit rushed. Nonetheless she was fairly pleased with her efforts, and she wishes everyone a Happy Easter.
Picture
Ian did not felt he had done much this morning, so instead he sent me 'one he had done earlier'.  A view of Southwold completed this week.
From Frances (who was unable to come this morning), an earlier sketch at Dunwich with oil below in the making.
Picture
Here is Harriet's drawing from this morning of the aquilegia's from one still life...
Picture
And Lesley's drawing of the hydrangeas from the other.

Lesley is also exhibiting at Snape (in a different exhibition).  Again details on the 'Messages from Members' page.
Picture
Freda tackled both portaiture and still life.
Sally L has sent her work from this morning.  She says, 'This is as far as I got this week, lovely colour contrasts in this week’s set-up, it’s so nice to have blue flowers, but the Hydrangea’s flower heads are a bit of a challenge.  The second picture is the finished version of my last week’s still life, I think I will call it Dancing Rhubarb, sleeping Leek!'
The third picture is by Agnes Miller Parker, The Uncivilised Cat, 1930.  There is a new exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre that is on until 3rd July, of Scottish Women Artists.  Sally will organise a group booking if enough people want to go (let her know if you are interested).  More information at www.sainsburycentre.ac.uk/whats-on/scottish-women-artiststransforming-tradition/
Here is my attempt - I think I should have either done the fruit or the flowers, not both.

Don't forget about the trip to Cambridge - there are still places available.  Let Sally P know if you want to go.   The Chairman's Project is imminent - 28th April is the date to put in your diary for the big reveal.

 addendum - Therese Powell 14th April 2022

Please see Stop Press regarding the scattering of Therese's ashes.
Hello everyone!  I hope you’ve had a good week and are in a painting mood.
How lucky we are to be living in a relatively civilised and safe country, where we can pursue our various interests, albeit with a big, black Putin-shaped shadow hanging over us all.

It was Diana’s turn today to present the still life but the portrait sitting duties were shared with Elizabeth. 14 members present today, I'm told.
Carolyn, working from home as usual, has sent in two pieces of work.  The first is from a photo of a still life from an earlier session at EAG. She started off in watercolour but finished her painting with colour pencils - as she said, to define it better.  The second submission in pencil is of, as she puts it, ‘our bedroom toys’.

Frances
is just getting over Covid, though luckily not feeling ill, so could not go to EAG today. She sends a sketch done at Redgrave and Lopham Fen the other week and then a larger watercolour based on it.
Sally P did two portraits, one of Diana in the first half and one of Elizabeth in the second half.
Jane has chosen to do the leeks from the still life, in crayon.

The sketch of Diana is from John.
Diana says she enjoyed this morning, even her modelling stint, and thanks everyone who helped out. She has sent us photos of her still life, members at work in the room and two stages of her painting today.
Industrious as ever, Avril has done six portraits, first three of Diana and then three of Elizabeth.
Here is Harriet's picture for
the week.
Picture
Sally L has sent two: first a still life she started with a Norfolk artist, Rachel Thomas. She enjoyed it so much that she decided to work on it the next day at home.
The second picture is from this morning's EAG session, which she also intends to finish off at home.
This is Freda's still life from this
morning
And finally from Jackie, first her quick sketch of Diana, then she concentrated on the still life as she loved the coloured cup. The card sculpture was made last week shile she was self-isolating.  She says, not quite what Jo had in mind but it was fun and fifferent.
Sorry I haven't any more work of my own to show. Having a rest after my painting last week, but thinking about another one, probably from the same area as last week's.
Have a good, C-free week. Remember to send your work to Hannah next time, the theme for which is printing, by Jane, and be thinking about the Chairman's project for 28th April. Subject: Movement (see message from Sally P of 11th January - click here).

Cheers, Noreen
