Thursday 25 May, Framlingham

25/5/2023

Framlingham is an old favourite for the EAG's summer programmes and good for lots of different kinds of sketching.  I am sorry I am once again not able to be out with you sketching, but have included at the end 'one I did earlier'.  Thanks to Sally P we have a view of five of the six people at tea, Frances having had to leave very quickly. Also thanks for views of Jackie at work and of the castle.
Sally P tells us that the sun finally came out at 2.45 - just as they were packing away!  This, she says, is her unfinished offering.  (It looks pretty finished to me for a plein air piece, very good. N)
Picture
From Lesley a similar angle on the Castle on the Hill and another lovely painting.  She says there was little contrast in the sky.  She brought her alkyd oils out for the first time this year.
Picture
A third from the same angle from Jackie, who says, A stunning castle but not looking its best under cloudy skies.  Hers is in watercolour I think, which can be a tricky medium for this sort of landscape, but Jackie is an expert watercolourist.
She has added an interesting photo of the steep rampart pathways.

Here are four relatively quick small sketches done in chilly Framingham, says Frances:
1. View from bridge over moat ditch as you enter the castle. I might use it for an acrylic painting.
2. Done from the exterior with charcoal and wash. Vaguely thinking about geometrical shapes.

3. A little more delicate approach!!!
4. Wash and charcoal of small window of what was the Workhouse built into the original wall of the Great Hall.  She likes the window on the sepia paper.
Ian J sent in some artwork from last week's location, Mellis.  First is one of Ian's then two of Josie's.
Diana too has sent in a photo of Mellis from last week ..........
......  followed by "Drew this out using old lipstick applier, glad I didn’t throw it away, worked brilliantly;  blocked in the tone, then the cat went missing so I haven't done any more."
Picture
We are introduced to Hades with a nice drawing by Carolyn, using Inktense pencils dry.  She says he is a big black boisterous Alsation (not hers).
Picture
And here is one I did earlier ..... probably about 2014. (NC)
Next week the meeting is at Harriet's, with views also in Wickham Skeith village with cottages and pond.  Do go along if you can and send your work to Hannah for the blog.
Have a good week.

18TH MAY 2023 - MELLIS  (AND SALLY T'S)

18/5/2023

The day was not promising - a dull sky and not enough contrast, even after coffee and biscuits at Sally T's house, and none of us were sure how warm it would be.  I know I had two jackets of different weights in the car... but the sky cleared through the morning, and we were soon basking in sunshine, with blue sky (and clouds laid on just for Ian C).  There were seven of us present for coffee, but Diana, Hilary and Ian J and Josie all turned up a little later.  It seems to have been a productive day, as you will see.  I left early, so thanks to Sally T for the T(ea)-time pictures!
First, Ian C, who was working in watercolour, something he hasn't done for a while.  He said he kept moving them out of the way, and then thought, he would have a go again, and as you can see, he got the kind of sky he likes in the end...
Jackie also worked in watercolour.  Given the weather, there was no paint medium that wouldn't have dried quickly, so my hat is off to all those who were painting today!

And here's another accomplished watercolour, this time from Liz, who tackled the pub very successfully.
Diana came and left early,   she has sent work that relates to last week.  She says, 'I used google earth to walk round Walberswick, a route that once we did for real.
This collage loosely based on photo, next 2 of Mellis  from previous years...'
Carolyn has tackled a difficult subject, a view of her garden that caused her some difficulty, though she persisted... very hard dealing with so much perspective.
Picture
Lesley was at a textile workshop in Thetford.  She made it to tea at SallyT's, and was impressed with everyone's efforts.  She said of her submission, 'My Contemporary Quilt group had a workshop led by a member doing Shibori, a Japanese way of manipulating fabric (like tie dye), then we were to dye it with woad (note the link to the Iceni,) After a talk on woad, we tied, objects into fabric( I used washers from my husbands shed), stitched, gathered and scrunched fabric. See first photo.
However the woad dye bath didn’t work. So the second photo of  ‘some I made earlier’ ( several years ago) shows the effects one can get from these techniques using indigo, which is the same pigment as woad. Apparently these ancient dyes are quite tricky to use.'
Frances is still in Brittany, and has sent two pictures, the first a very quick sketch done balancing on a fence overlooking a marsh by the sea. Second a continuation of her scraper board hare. This time on canvas with acrylic.  She said, 'Not sure about little hare top right. He was done in a hurry to send blog to you! He may have to be repainted.'
Picture
Sally P worked in oil, and has achieved rather a lot.  The perspective she worried about early on is definitely there, as is the suggestion of the mixture of flowers, etc. growing in the grass.  She got rather a lot done after I left, which may say something about interruption!
Finally my drawing.  I was quite happy with this, although I think the sky needs something to show its brightness, but probably not colour, as it would over-balance the picture.
There is a message on the Messages from Members page about finding tutors for next winter's sessions.  Have a look, and let Lesley know if you have any ideas to offer.
Noreen's turn next week, and the venue will be Framlingham.  Let's hope the weather holds out...

ADDendum to 11th May blog

13/5/2023

Here are some more images from the visit to Walberswick which I was sadly not able to add to the blog on Thursday.  The first two are from Jackie, including her lively, expressive watercolour sketch.  She says she made quite a few sketches (presumably pencil) but they were too faint to photograph.
The second group show members present and two more landscapes. The last one is Philip's. You will see that Avril took her dog Bob with her.

Thursday 11th May at Walberswick

Walberswick!  What a great place for sketching, with the ferry, boats and river views, people crabbing, old fishermen’s huts, beach huts and distant views along the coast.  It was one of my favourite places for outdoor sketching.  The weather seems unsettled which might have deterred some, but it turned out better than expected.  (Thanks to Sally T for sending Philips photos with wonderful cloud images.)
As usual, click to enlarge images
Avril said it was a lovely sunny day but she only managed a few quick sketches.
Sally T did some quick drawings of the river at Walberswick today. She says they had a lovely day. The weather was warm and sunny. No need for  wooly hats and gloves or macs. Amazing cloud formations, as you can see above.

Sally L was unable to go to Walberswick today but has sent us a picture of her favourite building in Bungay, which she has just finished.  A difficult choice with all the details and challenging perspectives.  I like all the details in the shop windows and doorway, as well as the glimpses down the sides. And it’s apparently in her favourite Norwich City colours.

Others who were not there today have sent in work done at home. Here are Harriet's.
These are from Diana which include a collage and beginning of painting from photos taken at Angela’s last week, also an old photo of huts at Southwold which she comments may not be there since the fire.
Frances, in France, has done a sketch of a village beside the river Vilaine south of Rennes. For the second picture she has tried to use a scratch card.  Not sure how she has done it but I think it is very effective.
From Lesley in Northumberland:  here are two 10 minute sketches of the Northumberland coast, in pen: first one looking south from Lindisfarne to Bamburgh castle, second a few miles up the coast looking south from Lindisfarne to Bamburgh!
The weather has improved at last,

Carolyn has not let us down and has sent in her picture of the week. She has tried to contrast the 'smoothness' of the mushrooms with the 'roughness' of the grass.
Picture
I hope you will forgive me for including a painting of my own done several years ago.  It shows Walberswick in inclement weather and hardy crabbers. (N)
Picture
Apologies for not being able to include many of the photos sent by Avril and Sally T.  Unfortunately I was having a lot of difficulty in uploading them on to the website and eventually had to give up. However I think I have got all your artwork in.
Next week's sketching is at Mellis, with facilities at Sally T's.  Hannah will be in charge of the blog, so please remember to send your work to her.

4 MAY 2023 - AT ANGELA'S GARDEN

4/5/2023

So we have got to the first of the summer sessions already, but despite the much trumpeted climate change, it feels like we are only just out of winter.  The wind was still cold today, and although I didn't get to Angela's (out helping my husband with the boat), it was cold for plein air work, and she tells me that only four of the seven or so who came ended up staying until 3, and their fingers were dropping off by then.  I gather they had all enjoyed fruit cake and drinks by then anyway, so any time spent working was a bonus!
In addition to these pictures, Diana took photos as references to use later in the week, at home.
Here are two of Harriet's paintings that are part of the exhibition in Stradbroke Church (see Exhibitions page); both on the theme of waves.
Sally P's drawings from this morning: trees by the pond, and looking down the steps to the pond.
Avril's work from today, and thanks to her for the photos at the beginning.
A lovely study of apple blossom from Maggie-Anne, in watercolour pencil.  She wishes the colour was more subtle, but it looks right to me, the way the colour changes towards the edges.
Picture
Frances was at Curwen Print where she spent a day doing Jigsaw lino cuts.
1 My jigsaw

2 Results hanging at home
3 Paper I brought home from our cleaning of rollers. Thought it would be useful and could be developed with paint and ink????

Angela says, 'This is a painting inspired by rape fields and Suffolk oaks and ashes. Finished it today though I may leave it hanging about to see if anything comes to mind!'
Picture
Here are two drawings by Carolyn, a cactus grown from a cutting and an arrangement of clothes on a chair.  Both sit really well within the space.  Carolyn does find interesting views of ordinary things.
Finally, I'm afraid Sally L has let herself down - after her fantastic presentation of the perfect elements for outdoor sketching last week, what do we find?
'After all that bragging last week I forgot my brush pen, my drawing pen ran out of ink, and my car biro ran dry!
I should have brought more equipment with me…'
Picture
Next week's venue is Walberswick.  Let's hope it's bit warmer, and that it stays sunny.  Enjoy the coronation - although the forecast for that is dreadful!  Noreen is in charge of the blog next week, so you know where to send your work.  Have a nice week.
