15th December 2022 - CHRISTMAS PARTY AND 40TH BIRTHDAY!

15/12/2022

Today we celebrated not only Christmas, and the end of part one of a proper winter programme, but also 40 glorious years of the Eye Arts Guild.  Unfortunately the weather was not on our side as, although the sun shone all day, it was bitterly cold with thick frost on the ground, which I think accounted for lower than expected numbers.  However, a very good time was had by all.  The food was excellent.  There was a proper celebratory cake, carol singing, games and an extra Chairman's Project which inspired a host of completely different works.
Picture
Everything laid out and looking very festive.  Just waiting for a few more people to arrive...
And below, the festive food, then members discussing answers to the quiz and the fiendish quiz masters revealing the answers.  We also played pictionary in teams, which got very competitive!
Jackie and Sally P worked on these boards featuring past programmes and photos of members, locations, events, patchworks, from all the years. They will be made into albums for posterity.
Lesley talked about the founding of the guild and handed over to June, our one remaining  founding member, who had put together this reminiscence of EAG's beginnings.

'40 years ago I joined a small group of painters (adult) class at the Eye Youth Club building opposite the Guildhall. We had a small exhibition at the Guildhall, not a house then, but offices, which led to five of us enthusiasts to form our own Art Club.  We advertised to see if anyone else would be interested and we rented a room for the evening at the 4 Horseshoes in Eye. Several people turned up and so we formed a committee, with Ruth Shuttleworth as chairman, and 4 other members, Betty Thomson, Sylvia Parton, Thelma Hodgins and me.  Two of those were also members of the Bury Art Group, so we had access to their constitution, which we copied and still use today. It was decided to call ourselves Eye Arts Guild, because of our first exhibition held at the Guildhall.  We also had a demonstration that evening by Pauline (whose surname I don’t recall), a local artist, printing on scrunched tissue paper.

From then on during the summer we would meet on Thursday evening at a member’s house to show our day’s work.  Then winter came and our meeting place was Stoke Ash Village Hall. Our very first demonstration was how to paint a still life in oils, by Dorothy Swanton.
The membership grew and became popular. After Stoke Ash Village Hall we have had to move to bigger venues, so may we continue to meet, paint and enjoy the pleasure of painting and make great masterpieces!'
Next it was time to reveal the works inspired by the Chairman's Project '40'.  These were very varied, some required exposition, and some presentations were very funny. The first group are: June's mix of still lifes down the years - spot the objects you have arranged, Lesley's landscape from the spoil heap of a copper mine in Anglesey, Ian C's events from 1982 and John's 40 composed of Eye town hall and an artist's palette.
The next group - Noreen has used lots of images from EAG artworks to make a 40, see if you can see yours - and named members as stars.  Sally T's combines tea and art, Avril has painted 1940s children, and Jill used 40 flowers to make her numerals.
Frances has made leaves for a twig tree that name 40 artists, Sally P went with '4Teas', Harriet made 40 into an advent calendar referencing 1982, the year of her graduation, Madness in the charts, Channel 4 start up, and EXXON mentioning Global Warming in a letter, and Jane made a concertina of 40 portraits drawn on Thursday mornings - find your face!
Richard's needed a parformance - Everything Stops for Tea had a painting, a printed teeshirt, and a cup of tea produced by his elegant assistants - Sally L and Jackie hidden by props, Sally P visible.
Sally L had us all in fits with EAG-40, the only solution you will ever need, by the sound of it! Very ingenious.
Mine [Hannah] is a little animation made of 40 cells, the eye growing older as it goes along.
Lesley created a wonderful celebratory cake, beautifully iced, and more important, delicious!
Here she is cutting it.
Diana wasn't able to come because of a cough/cold, but she has sent photos of her contribution, and says,  'My 40 is a concertina book with 40 bits of my work going back to the early 80s in vaguely the right order, although I didn’t join the guild til 2000. Happy Xmas and Peaceful New Year to everyone.  Dx'

Finally, here is something from Liz, that was held over from last week.

The new Chairman's Project for April 2023 was announced today - 'Elements'
Get your thinking caps on.
The next meeting is on 5th January, and will be organised by Ian C.  See you there!
And I will be blogging again then, so send me your contributions.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Thursday 8th Dec. with Jane

Dire weather warnings this morning, but apart from being very cold with ground frost in places, all was well and we had a good crowd at EAG.  Hopefully, all will be well next week too, for our Christmas party, but if not, look out for a possible message about cancellation on the website.  While mentioning the party, note that members are asked to arrive at 10.15 instead of 10am, to allow the Committee time to set everything up.
Jane was in charge of the still life set up today which was very varied, interesting and challenging.
She also posed herself as the model, which seemed to be a very popular choice, judging by the number jostling for places to sit.
Before proceeding with today's work, here is Lesley Bu's work last week, which was not picked up in emails until too late in the day.  Apologies, Lesley.
Picture
Frances came in first with her work.  She is still in Brittany and says, "Bonjour!".  She adds:  "First is a quick sketch done in chilly conditions standing on the beach with a lovely sea near Trinité sur Mer. Second is acrylic and some ink, playing with a grid system and autumn oak leaves. Will probably cut it up for cards!!! "
Avril says she was on a roll today.  {I should say so! She has done nine portraits!  N}
Diana did some watercolours today, and thanks to her for one of the still life photos above.  She describes it as another good morning.
A portrait from Jackie, who has caught a very good likeness, and two from Elizabeth.
More portraits, first from Sally P - just the one as she says her second picture was not a success.  And two from Sally T, charcoal on sugar paper.
Back to the still life and here is Lesley's take on the model owl and spider plant in a mix of watercolour, acrylic ink and indian ink.
Following that is Harriet's contribution, one that she did from today's still life, and the other picture is an image that she's been working on this week, depicting a landscape in Wales, which is not quite finished.
Our most consistent contributor, Carolyn, has nothing for us today.  She says, 'I am afraid there is nothing for the blog this week. We have had a rather frustrating time with computers and printers.'
No sketch from me either - I didn't really get anywhere with mine.  I hope to see lots of you at the Christmas party, but please don't forget to check the website on Wednesday evening in case the weather is really bad.  Meanwhile, do read the Stop Press page.  And it is Hannah's turn to do the blog.
Cheers, Noreen.

1st December 2022 - with Josie and Ian

LATE ADDENDUM 5TH DECEMBER 2022

Many apologies to Diana, whose pictures from Thursday somehow were omitted from the Blog - my fault entirely.  Here they are.  And also a reminder to let Lesley know if you have a 'turn' you want to share at the Christmas party on 15th December.

A double act today!  We had a large and very diverse still life, with plenty of texture, colour and shape to wrestle with, and also Ian as model for the portraitists.
First, Carolyn has sent a drawing of her ornamental crab apple tree, which is still a lovely splash of colour in the garden. She added the following greeting -

'I won't be coming to the Bowls Club again till next year.
So Happy Christmas and New Year to all!'

If you also have a greeting for the members, send it to Noreen next week.
Picture
Here are the portraits drawn this morning - Ian, using palette knife (following themed morning some weeks ago), two from Elizabeth, Jane (struggling with likeness, she says), two from Sally P (who also found it hard to get a likeness [which I think is definitely there in the first picture - H], but is pleased with the legs in the second), and two from Jackie.
And now for the still lifes (still lives?), first June (great choice of paper colour), Sally T (an experiment in ink and wash) and then mine (Hannah - not yet finished).
Frances is away in Brittany this week, but has sent these two, a sketch she did at Redgrave and Lopham Fen last week and some experimental tiny stamps she is in the process of making. Tempted by the small circular pieces in Jarrolds!

Sally L was doing her own thing this week, working on the lemons from last week. 'I have been having fun trying alternative backgrounds for the lemons that I painted last week using the pen tool on the photo editing screen.
So this is my mock-up background (first picture).
And this is my attempt at interpreting it, not yet finished (second).'
Harriet has sent in her work from this morning and a painting from Wales earlier this week. She enjoyed using the coloured background for the toy construction vehicle.
Don't forget the Christmas party, coming up in two weeks.  If you have worked on the Chairman's project of '40', you should have it ready for then.  There is a list that will be available again next week to tick, to say you are coming, and what food you want to bring.  If you want to do a 'turn' of some kind (recite a poem, do a reading, play an instrument) to entertain the party, please let Lesley know by then, so we have some idea of timing.

Noreen will be blogging next week, so send her your photos in good time.
