thursday 25th May, Flixton air museum

What a great day to be outdoors drawing and sketching!  The sun shone for us and the wind kept calm.  We had all sorts of subjects, from the many aircraft on display, to a rusting jumble of ancient propellers and bits, to a rocket, buildings and more.
Ten members were out sketching and most stayed for tea, chat and photos at the NAAFI.  We were joined by Jackie who told us about her wonderful painting holiday.
See samples of our work below - some super drawings, a number of which look quite  surreal to me.

Thursday 18th May, thelnetham windmill

Our destination today was Thelnetham Windmill, er .... Blo Norton, er .... The Beehive Coffee shop at the Dutch Barn Nursery ....   Well, the coffee shop was very popular, for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea so many of us did not stray far from it (we were 14 all together).  We did a bit of sketching and painting too, around the nursery, at the windmill, and at the church.  I believe the windmill was difficult as it was not possible to sit far enough away from it to get a good view.
Navigating our way there proved challenging for some of us, not least those with SatNav.

A sunny, windy day for our first day of the summer programme.  Gaze's is a good place to start as there is so much there to exercise us:  garden furniture, statues and ornaments, tools of all kinds, bicycles, tricycles, and some items so mysterious it was hard to imagine what they were for.  And the café is so handy for a continuous supply of refreshments.  About 12 members attended and some of their work is shown below - though one or two managed to escape before photos were taken (no names, Les!)

I think we should thank all those who have worked so hard to produce the excellent winter programme just completed, and now the summer one.  The summer one especially requires a lot of work checking out venues, obtaining permissions and making arrangements.  So THANK YOU!

Don't forget, next week is at Thelnetham Mill.

Thursday 5 May, cambridge

This Thursday was our coach trip to Cambridge, and the last day of our Winter Programme.  Les regaled us with sweets en route (thanks, Les!)
After being set down at the Fitzwilliam Museum people soon dispersed to find coffee - in the Fitzwilliam Café, Fitzbillie's (great coffee there!) or elsewhere.  Thereafter, many took in the culture of the museum, went shopping, wandered round the beautiful Botanical Gardens, met up with friends - or all of the above.
Painting outdoors starts next week.

The Madonnas and Miracles exhibition gave us an interesting insight into how religion and, in particular, religious symbols affected the lives of ordinary people at home in the Italian Renaissance.

Making Waves (seascapes through drawing and watercolours since the 16th century) might be a little disappointing from today's perspective, as the drawings were mostly small and often rather dull and grey.  But when you consider they did not at that time have the advantage of our superb papers, watercolours and photography, you had to marvel at how they captured the detail of ships, stormy seas and raging battles of war.

This is a Handkerchief tree which I had not come across before and found in the Botanical Gardens.  Fascinating!
