Frances sat patiently while we sketched her, in some short and some longer poses.
For her still life, she gave us some interesting displays, one table being mostly of deep red, blues and gold, while the other one had a variety of objects in various colours, presented in the round so there was a good choice from all angles.
As usual a few people worked on their own projects.

Sally L reminded us that the theme next week is pen and ink - which could for example be pen and wash, so bring some colours too, also robust paper - not to mention coverings to protect table and floors.  Ink can be messy!  For full details see message from Sally.
Don't forget too to bring your entries for the next Wetland Centre exhibition:  pictures and entry forms plus hanging fee please.  See exhibitions.

Sue isn't able to join us quite so often these days, so it was nice to see her 'hosting' this session.
Reds! That was the still life challenge on one table:  getting the right hue, shade or tint to still clearly portray the objects, their shapes and shadows.  The green of the watermelon was a lovely contrast.  The other table was equally challenging, to my mind, but in a different way - see what a few of our artists made of these objects.

Sue made a good model, but did we do her justice?  It was not easy to capture her delicate  likeness.
Good to see Tom too today, just recovering from his cataract operation but still drawing away.  See his most recent work on his gallery page.

Sally reminded us that paintings for the next Earsham Wetland Centre Exhibition are required very soon.  I will be able to put the entry form on the website very shortly.
Next week it's Frances.

An all-day session today, and with a nod to the cancelled workshop many brought gouache paints to use.  Lesley, along with others, kindly shared her knowledge of the medium and there were books on display to guide us further.  So we had quite a lot of interesting gouache results.
Who knew that if you painted an image in gouache, covered the whole page in black Indian ink, then poured water over it, the gouache image emerged leaving a black backgound?  A number tried it with varying results - it obviously needs practice!
Personally I had not been very impressed with gouache up to this time, but a few tips have inspired me to persist as it obviously has a number of unique advantages that I had not been using.  That is one of the great benefits of our Guild - we learn from each other and we experiment with different media and techniques.
By the way, it was good to hear from Joan Henriques this week and her message can be read here.

Thursday 7th February, with Jane

Jane, who we can normally expect to produce striking but delicate portraits, was on the other side of the process this morning and posed as our model.  She gave us two poses and also brought the objects for the two still life arrangements.  One was glass-themed with colourful fruit and scarves, while the other was mainly silverware alongside decorative china.

I find it hard enough to portray what I see, but it is inspiring to see how some others manage to get really creative with it.

By the way, Carolyn and her hearing aid have been reunited.  It was in the back of her car.  She is most relieved and thanks everyone for showing so much concern in the hunt for it.

PS  Late news:  next week's workshop has had to be cancelled.  Lesley's message gives all the information about a replaced all-day session for ALL MEMBERS.
