25th APRIL 2024 - THE CHAIRMAN'S PROJECT

25/4/2024

The last session of the winter programme attacted a good number of members, mostly bringing with them work that represented considerable thought of the Chairman's Project for this year: 'Looking Up'.
As is usual for the Chairman's project, each member gave an explanation of the process that had led to the finished work that they presented.Somehow we zipped along, without a coffee break (most of us had had coffee at the start of the session), and finished quite early.
So it also proved to be a very sociable morning - though when was an EAG meeting not sociable!  There was ample time for mingling and chatting once the business of the session was over, and it was very nice to see some faces that have been missing recently from our weekly meetings.
Before we get to the work presented this morning, here is a piece recently completed by Sally L (who was not able to come), that she felt fitted the title, though it might also be 'the light at the end of the tunnel'.  Either way, lovely colour, light and interesting marks.
Picture
So here are the first few participants, with close-ups of their work: Lesley, who remembered a day out shortly after lockdown ended; Sally P., who brought us the story of the Mountain Chicken frog, from the Caribbean, with only 20 animals of the species in the wild, whose population is being protected, and whose numbers are now increasing, and Ian C, who gave us clouds with silver linings! Finally in this group, Carolyn brought Us a 'Selfie' - looking up, and wintry trees looking up to the sky.
Next, Sally T, who didn't quite risk life and limb to look up the railway line at Mellis level crossing, producinjg her lovely pen and ink, with its abstract feel, then Freda (who sat down while explaining, so I don't have a picture of her presentation) of a painting of sequoias towering up to the sky, with a kestrel.  Mick showed his re-imagining of St Sebastian as Alexi Navalny, looking to the heavens, and Josie gave us brightly coloured birds
Now we have Ian J, with a painting that includes collage, of trees (and birds) looking up to the sky; Bea paintings rejoices that the population of hedgehogs is finally 'looking up', as are red squirrel numbers.  Harriet had a similar idea to Freda, and used Google Street Scene to visit somewhere she goes on holiday, where she found herself in a woodland glade full of conifers. She also sent me some of her cloud studies, which are below.  Maggie-Anne gave us a delicate study of cherry blossom.  She has obviously been looking up into a cherry tree with great concentration.
Jackie spoke of the quiet tranquility of Suffolk countryside, and here is her beautiful rendering of a buzzard in flight - we've all looked up at that cry, haven't we?  Judith chose an image of someone looking up, almost otherwordly (sorry about the light across the glass, Judith). Next Avril, with a self-portrait looking up, or even reaching up, done in a very graphic style, and then Richard, with a little poem, and an extremely tranquil little painting.
Frances was in Brittany, so Lesley presented her work - a sketch that worked through various ideas, and then a finished painting, taking up one of those ideas.  Angela gave us 'Three Watchers' people looking to the heavens for answers, but perhaps with little idea of from which direction those ideas might come (to the right of the picture of her presentation).  My contribution was a little book of clouds, to use for looking up the different types of clouds there are...
I hope those of you who were not able to come have enjoyed seeing what the members produced today.  Next week is the beginning of the Summer Programme (details on the Events page), and members will be sketching and painting in Hoxne.  Sally L. will be doing the blog, so send any contributions to her.  It will be Avril's turn the week after, at Framlingham.
Let's hope we have a good summer, with rather better weather, and I hope to see you out and about...

A reminder that next week is the last session of the winter programme when we will have the Show And Tell for the Chairman’s Project, ‘Looking Up’.
Also that entries for the summer exhibition in Diss are due in next week.

After the Show and Tell we are having The Frame Swap. If anyone has unwanted picture frames  bring them in them to swap with others which are the right size for your entries.

If you have a tabletop easel can you please bring it to display work.
There were a select numbers of members here today who supported each other well. Ian put a sports theme on the table today which tested members with perspective especially with the shoes.
Picture
Ian patiently sat for the portraits, while Josie, Judith and myself did our own thing

.Josies three free style paintings were colourful, she said she could print and do separate images. People thought maybe there could be more depth by using contrast.
Judith liked her picture, an exercise from a sketch, but will probably paint on top of it and she used it as practice. She continued with the 007 paintings.

I had a go at acrylics doing my dogs Bob and Sam.
Sally T was disappointed with the likeness of hers.  Ian's portraits were done in pencil and he thought a bit faint , although they had good eyes.
Freda  was not sure about her perspective with the legs and Mick's pictures looked fine
The still life pictures starting with Sally P, she was pleased with the mottled effect that was made by kitchen roll either adding paint or taking off colour. Then Bea's which she thought needed widening and could include more background to stop the shoes floating. Hanna's was a very detailed piece which needs white for the highlights which will be done at home.
Picture
Harriet is very accomplished as there are lots of angles and I think the shadows worked well.

Picture
Jackie's as ever were very accurate, spot on and she also tried colour.

Picture
Carolyn sent a drawing inside a pub with unusual décor based on houseplants.

Two sketches from Frances of Llandwyn Island Anglesey where she has memories of staying in this little lighthouse in her youth while working on the Nature reserve. they are done with pencil and ink.

Next week Hannah will be doing the blog, so if you are unable to come to Eye, send her anything you want included.

4TH APRIL 2024 - LANDSCAPES IN OILS WITH JOHN SHAVE

I think all the participants learned a great deal today.  John Shave is an excellent tutor.  He spent the first hour and a bit demonstrating his method of painting in oils, in this case from a photograph, but, as he told us, he mainly paints 'en plein air' and had brought with him a book of his paintings on linen to show examples of what can be achieved - something to aspire to in the forthcoming summer season!
Below you can see the step-by-step images of his demo... First 'drawing' the different parts of the subject with paint, then blocking in the main areas of colour, before going on to greater detail.  Warmer colours to the front and cooler colours further back, lifting areas of dark to insert a splash of light colour.  Light should be surrounded by darks to make it stand out.  The final image shows the photograph he worked from.
So we all worked for the rest of the session on either photos borrowed from John or from images we had brought with us, and John came round and offered advice and constructive criticism, and occasionally took a paintbrush in hand to show what he meant on the actual painting concerned.  More work continued after lunch, with two of us completing more than one painting.  A critique at the end was very useful to all the participants.  A big thank you to John for a really interesting workshop!
So first we have Lesley, Sally P, Josie and Ian J
Next are Ian C, Avril, Jill and Elaine.
And finally, John, two from Harriet, and me (Hannah).  It is very interesting to see what different choices we all made of what to paint.
Don't forget the countdown is on for the Chairman's project to be shown on April 25th, our last day indoors for this season.  Have a good week.  Sally L  will be in charge of the blog next week, so send any contributions for that to her.
