I think all the participants learned a great deal today. John Shave is an excellent tutor. He spent the first hour and a bit demonstrating his method of painting in oils, in this case from a photograph, but, as he told us, he mainly paints 'en plein air' and had brought with him a book of his paintings on linen to show examples of what can be achieved - something to aspire to in the forthcoming summer season! Below you can see the step-by-step images of his demo... First 'drawing' the different parts of the subject with paint, then blocking in the main areas of colour, before going on to greater detail. Warmer colours to the front and cooler colours further back, lifting areas of dark to insert a splash of light colour. Light should be surrounded by darks to make it stand out. The final image shows the photograph he worked from. So we all worked for the rest of the session on either photos borrowed from John or from images we had brought with us, and John came round and offered advice and constructive criticism, and occasionally took a paintbrush in hand to show what he meant on the actual painting concerned. More work continued after lunch, with two of us completing more than one painting. A critique at the end was very useful to all the participants. A big thank you to John for a really interesting workshop! So first we have Lesley, Sally P, Josie and Ian J Next are Ian C, Avril, Jill and Elaine. And finally, John, two from Harriet, and me (Hannah). It is very interesting to see what different choices we all made of what to paint. Don't forget the countdown is on for the Chairman's project to be shown on April 25th, our last day indoors for this season. Have a good week. Sally L will be in charge of the blog next week, so send any contributions for that to her.
