Thursday 24 November with Sally P

24/11/2022

Sally’s still life set-up was inspired by an article in November’s Artists and Illustrators magazine, by Lucy McKie.  Here are some photos taken from her article.  She is a full time artist, working exclusively in oils, and has portraits and still life paintings in collections all over the world.  She didn’t follow the route of a formal art school education, preferring simply to paint and learn from close observation.
This is what Sally set up for us, which includes some baubles as possible inspiration for Christmas paintings.

This is what Lesley was inspired to do, using watercolour with no initial drawing.
Harriet too was drawn to the flowers and sent two images.
Frances decided she would play with watercolour and ink, using odd pens she has inherited!  Colour wash first, then casual drawing afterwards.
The fourth one looks like a sketch through the Bowls Club window.
Hannah says, "Here is my drawing from this morning. Not yet finished as I want to add the irises behind. I may then try China’s trick of photocopying and then adding colour, to avoid spoiling what I already have."

This is June's unfinished work from her still life today.

Jackie's delicate watercolour still life is a work in progress.

Noreen contented herself today with a small sketch of the still life in fine pen, helped by pencil.

Carolyn has sent her still life drawings from this morning.
She also sent me a drawing of a motorbike from a photo, which a friend supplied her with.
Sally L has a dilemma:  she thinks her first sketch is the best one, but on rubbish paper.  I dont know about the paper, but the sketch is scintillating!!!

The still life table
Sally offered herself as the model and posed resting on a large cushion (beanbag?) on the floor.
Avril produced six aketches in record time!
At a more leisurely pace we also had portraits from John, Ian, two from Jane who said she enjoyed the drawing but felt she had not achieved a good likeness, and two from Elizabeth in her distinctive style.  The last one is from Frances, for which she also used pencil.

Three 'finish-offs' from Diana, all very colourful and intriguing, and a photo of her mahonia, buzzing with the noise of a swarm of bees.
This is from Sally:  "A commission given to me back in January! Taken from a photo of a picture that had been printed on cartridge paper with not a lot of definition or clarity, so a bit of a struggle! As soon as he said I don't need it until Christmas it was stopped and placed to one side!"

A message from Lesley, who has asked me to remind everyone that it’s only 3 weeks to the EAG party so 3 weeks to finish your ‘40’ piece. Also, if you would like to participate, please find a poem, piece of seasonal prose, song/piece of music or any other contribution to our Christmas miscellany.
That's all for today.  Model and still life again next week.  Remember to send your work to Hannah for the blog.
