John Glover is a professional portrait painter in oils and other media, including pastels. This workshop was about pastel portraits. After giving a brief run through of the basic techniques required to get a good likeness, particularly measuring and angles, John did a demonstration using one of our two brilliant models for the day. He started with a simple line drawing in charcoal to get the general shape and position of the features, then going on to add colour in various forms of pastel: soft, hard and pencils. In the short time available, the portrait was not 'finished' but you can see his excellent artwork alongside the model in the photo here. Everyone then dived in with gusto to paint one or both of the models, with some very good results as you will see in the following photos. Many thanks to John for a really enjoyable and interesting workshop. No doubt the work done today will be reflected in the results on our regular mornings! As usual, click images to enlarge them. |
